Cedar planks are great for the outdoors, they do not rot and are flea deterrent. The standard planks are a milled 1" thick by either 8" or 12" wide. Milled wood is slightly smaller than the measurements given.

  • Wood for the floor does not require hardware and lays securely in place.
  • Planks only, no hardware needed. Easily lays in place with an estimated gap of 1/2" between each plank.
  • 1"x8" cedar is used for the floor. When the floor dimension requires it, other widths of cedar may be used.
  • 8" wood is nominal 1x8 = Actual size is 7.25" x 0.875"

Habitat Haven's cedar floor is a "floating" floor made of individual planks. They are meant to be placed inside the enclosure and can easily be removed for cleaning or overwintering. Between each board, there should be a gap of approximately 1/2" which allows for proper water drainage, as well as expansion caused by changes in weather and humidity.

    Wobbly and huge gap

I am disappointed in the floor. It is wobbly and there is a huge gap -- like a plank is missing or the boards are not quite wide enough. The professional nstallers noticed this, too, stating there is usually a space left for expansion for temp changes, but this gap was larger than they had ever seen before. They noted they were going to tell Habitat Haven about it.
